Questions

What is a smoke seal in a curtain wall system?
A smoke seal is a passive fire protection component installed at the perimeter joint between a curtain wall facade and the floor slab. It prevents the passage of cold and hot smoke through the slab-to-facade gap — an often-overlooked fire risk in high-rise buildings. FiroBlock’s smoke seal forms part of its certified perimeter barrier system, tested to IS 18190 and ASTM E2307.

The Curtainwalls are supported by slab of the building with bracket system; these often leave a gap between the curtainwall and the concrete slab. These gaps are also left for workability and for curtainwall to allow deflection in its life due to wind and other factors.

These Gaps act like a chimney for fire and smoke to propagate from one floor to another and eventually leaving the whole building at risk. Additional to this, the spandrel zone formed at the interface of slab and curtainwall is also a critical place for fire, due to the leap frogging effect which is fire breaking the glass and trying to jump to the next floor.

So, to contain this fire from propagating we shall use a Tested perimeter barrier system like FIROBLOCK which is rated for 2 hrs in F & T-rating. This sytem contains fire from reaching to the adjacent floors and ensures safe evacuation for occupants in the building.

Yes. The National Building Code of India (NBC 2016) requires fire compartmentation at the perimeter of floor slabs in curtain wall buildings to prevent vertical fire and smoke spread. A certified smoke seal system like FiroBlock, complying with IS 18190, satisfies this requirement and supports building approval from fire authorities.

FiroBlock Smoke Seal is manufactured from high-density, non-combustible mineral (rock) wool, with fibre orientation engineered through a specialized factory process to meet specific performance requirements. The product is laminated with aluminium foil facings on both sides to enhance handling and installation characteristics.

Under fire conditions, the system helps maintain compartment integrity by restricting the passage of smoke and hot gases. It is designed for long-term performance in both static and dynamic joint applications and provides a durable, reliable smoke-sealing solution for fire-rated assemblies.

FiroBlock smoke seals are designed for the life of the building. The components used are durable, non-degradable, and do not require replacement under normal conditions. FiroBlock recommends periodic inspection as part of your building’s passive fire protection maintenance programme.
The spandrel zone is the portion of a curtain wall façade located in front of the floor slab edge, typically consisting of opaque glazing, metal back pans, insulation, or other non-vision materials. This area is particularly vulnerable to the leap-frog effect, where flames exiting a lower floor can break through or bypass the façade system and re-enter the building at the floor above. FiroBlock SP (Spandrel Protection) is designed to safeguard this critical zone using high-density, non-combustible rockwool insulation with aluminium foil facing. The system helps limit heat transfer and reduces the risk of fire propagation through the spandrel area, supporting the overall fire performance of the curtain wall assembly. For effective fire containment, spandrel insulation should be used as part of a complete tested firestop system. FiroBlock SP has been tested in conjunction with FiroBlock FS (Fire Safing) and FiroBlock MP (Mullion Protection), demonstrating up to 2 hours of fire resistance as part of an integrated curtain wall fire containment solution.
