Curtianwall facades are installed to a building by supporting it to the slab with a gap which is generally an allowance for movement in façade during its life and is also a design constraint for engineers developing it. These gaps follow through every floor over the entire spread of curtainwall making it an expressway for fire to spread from source floor of fire to all other floors and this has to be contained. Fire also spreads through Leap frogging phenomenon which is breaking through the glass from source floor and jumping to the next floor.
Curtainwall Firestop systems have been evolved with time and there are quite a few systems offering this perimeter fire containment. More commonly the systems are divided into dry and wet systems. In today’s fast construction needs the dry system is opted more due to its flexibility of usage and fast installation.

The Curtainwalls are supported by slab of the building with bracket system; these often leave a gap between the curtainwall and the concrete slab. These gaps are also left for workability and for curtainwall to allow deflection in its life due to wind and other factors.
These Gaps act like a chimney for fire and smoke to propagate from one floor to another and eventually leaving the whole building at risk. Additional to this, the spandrel zone formed at the interface of slab and curtainwall is also a critical place for fire, due to the leap frogging effect which is fire breaking the glass and trying to jump to the next floor.
So, to contain this fire from propagating we shall use a Tested perimeter barrier system like FIROBLOCK which is rated for 2 hrs in F & T-rating. This sytem contains fire from reaching to the adjacent floors and ensures safe evacuation for occupants in the building.
For Firestopping in curtainwalls the material used should be enough flexible so that it does not leave gaps when the façade undergoes movement during its life time.
More importantly it should tested for at least 2 hrs as per relevant standards like IS 18190, ASTM E2307 and EN 1364-4 etc., where it is tested as a system not an individual product, simulating the real world scenario of the building .
